FORT JENNINGS-Fort Jennings hangin tough with Lima Central Catholic on Tuesday night at Fort Jennings high school but the Thunderbirds scored 11 points from the free throw line to down Fort Jennings 47-34.
The first quarter saw both teams in a competitive quarter. Abby Koester gave the hosts an early 3-2 lead with a three pointer but the visitors responded with a 6-0 run thanks to six points from Olivia Stolly to give them a 8-3 advantage.The hosts did get within 10-5 but the visitors would respond to take a 16-8 lead after one quarter of play.
Fort Jennings continued to battle in the second quarter as the hosts stayed within striking distance. LCC led by as many as 12 at 22-10 before the Musketeers found themselves back in it with their tough defense. Back to back baskets from Maggie Pothast got them within 25-16 before a couple of late foul shots gave the Thunderbirds a 27-16 halftime lead.
The Musketeers found their groove in the third quarter as they managed to outscore the visitors 14-9 in the quarter. It was a big quarter for the freshman Pothast as she tallied six points in the quarter to lead the comeback attempt. The lead was at 31-24 after a basket by Malcahy but the buckets from Pothast got the team within 36-30 before the quarter buzzer sounded.
In the final quarter, the free throw line was put into full use by the visitors. Fort Jennings’ offense was cold from the floor as the only points scored was a three pointer from Rachel Von Sossan and a free-throw from Hannah Grote. Stolly made use of her free throws as she connected on four of them and the Thunderbirds played keep away to drain out the clock to pick up the 47-34 victory.
