Lady Bearcats Power Past USV 62-15

SPENCERVILLE-The Spencerville Lady Bearcats played their second game of the season in a span of 18 hours as they hosted the Upper Scioto Valley Rams. Nine Spencerville players found the score column as the Bearcats beat the Lady Rams 62-15.

The visitors had an early 2-0 lead on a pair of free throws, but after that it was all Bearcats as they finished the quarter on a 30-2 scoring run. Kirsten Wurst and Gabi Croft got into a groove as they each scored seven points in the quarter. Lilyan Goecke also chipped in four points on a couple of breakaway layups to keep the momentum going in the quarter.

“All three of them are very capable scorers, but all three of them don’t care who scores as it really helps us,” said Spencerville head coach Greg Ekis. “They just want to win basketball games and they are unselfish players,” Ekis said, talking about Croft, Goecke, and Wurst.

The second quarter saw less scoring as the Bearcats flirted with the 35 point running clock. Spencerville went on a 11-0 run to begin the quarter, and the lead was as big as 41-4 on a bucket by Lilyan Goecke. The running clock was encountered, but the visitors answered with four straight points to trail 41-8 at halftime. Gabi Croft led all scorers with 12 points in the first half.

Spencerville kept on the attack in the second half, as they scored 10 points in the third quarter and 11 points in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Croft netted six points in the third quarter as part of a game high 18 points and the hosts led 51-10 after three quarters of play. The rest of the reserves were able to play the final quarter as the Bearcats coasted to a 62-15 victory.

Spencerville improves to 2-0 on the season and will be back on Tuesday when they host Elida before their conference opener on Thursday against their rivals from Delphos Jefferson.

“Both teams are very, very good, as they are extremely well coached, and we know this week will be a challenge, so we will take it one day at a time by getting better on Monday to prepare for Tuesday,” concluded Ekis.
