Bearcats Overwhelm Fort Jennings 54-21

FORT JENNINGS-The Spencerville Bearcats played their final game of the calendar year on Monday night, when they visited the Fort Jennings Musketeers. Spencerville made Fort Jennings uncomfortable all night long as the Bearcats defeated the Musketeers 54-21.

“I thought we had some great ball movement tonight, and I thought we had a lot of good looks at the basket because of it,” said Spencerville head coach Greg Ekis. “In the first half, we had five different players hit a three pointer and that’s good to see.”

Spencerville controlled the contest from the opening tip with a 10-0 scoring run as Lilyan Goecke knocked down a three pointer and later added a basket to give them the 10-0 advantage. Rachael Von Sossan ended the drought with a free-throw, but the visitors were far from done. Goecke went on to score six of the final nine Bearcats points in the quarter, as the Bearcats built a comfortable 19-4 lead.

A Von Sossan basket cut the lead to 19-6 in the second quarter but the Bearcats went on a deep, 18-0 scoring run to put the game out of reach. It started with a free-throw from Kirsten Wurst and a bucket from Gabi Croft that extended the lead to 22-6. The duo of Wurst and Croft accounted for 10 of the final 15 points as the Bearcats led 37-6 at halftime.

Spencerville was able to get the lead to the magical 35 point lead, and had a running clock in the second half thanks to a three pointer by Goecke. The Bearcats got four points from Wurst to extend the lead to 46-10. Fort Jennings’ best quarter was in the fourth, as they scored 11 points. Aubrey Jacomet was a spark, as she scored four points in the quarter.

“We are excited to be 7-2, as we have played some good teams and I have been pleased with how we have played so far,” Ekis said. “We have some work that we need to keep doing, but we can’t complain about that.”

Spencerville improves to 7-2 on the season and will be back on January 4th, when they travel to take on St.Mary’s. Fort Jennings drops to 1-7 and will be back in action on Monday, when they host McComb.
