LEIPSIC-Spencerville took their unbeaten record to Putnam county on Friday to battle league foe Leipsic. The Bearcats got off to a quick start as they cruised to a 72-40 victory.
“I thought our guys came out with great defensive energy tonight,” said Spencerville head coach Kevin Sensabaugh. “We did that right from the jump and it was one of the things we talked to [Dylan Cook] about. He doesn’t score much, but his job is to give us tremendous energy like he did tonight.”
Dylan Smith got the visitors off on the right foot as he scored five points in the quarter to give them the early lead. Blake Sommers came off the bench and powered the Bearcats with four points to put Spencerville ahead 17-6 at the end of the quarter.
Spencerville continued to bring on the defense as they limited Leipsic to two made field goals in the quarter to put a distance on the scoreboard. Owen Sensabaugh, who made his first start of the season, connected on a pair of triples to give them a 31-13 halftime advantage.
The visitors put a dent in the scoreboard in the third quarter as they poured in 22 points. Smith was able to get through the lane with some easy baskets and Sommers got a few second chance points and a shot from downtown to give Spencerville a 53-24 lead.
“He [Sommers] had a great week of practice so I think he deserved to play well,” said Sensabaugh of the performance. “I think he will be the first to tell you that he didn’t shoot well tonight, especially around the rim, and he left a lot of easy ones out there, but it was good to see him hit some perimeter shots.”
The reserves were able to play most of the quarter as both teams played out the final quarter. Brody Sommers and Michael Woods collected their first varsity points, while Blake Sommers scored five of his game high 16 points in the quarter to pick up the 72-40 victory.
Spencerville improves to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats will visit Kalida on Saturday night.
“It is going to be a tough matchup against Kalida and they are good,” concluded Sensabaugh. “Obviously with us being down Evan [Osting], it doesn’t help, and going on the road back to back nights isn’t easy. Playing at Kalida isn’t easy and we have to be competitive enough to accept the challenge to be ready to play.”
