NEW BREMEN- The Spencerville Lady Bearcats looked to pick up back to wins in as many days when they faced the Miami East Vikings. The visitors on the scoreboard got off to a hot start as they cruised to a 54-33 victory.
Miami East found their success from deep in the opening quarter as Spencerville was on their heels early. Camryn Francis took over the quarter with 12 points including a couple of shots from downtown to extend the lead to double digits at 16-7.
A pair of last minute shots by the Vikings gave them a 20-7 advantage. Gabi Croft kept the Bearcats in it early with five points.
The second quarter was a titanic struggle as both teams struggled from the floor. Spencerville received four points from Clara Goecke but the deficit still stood at double digits at halftime. Katie Paulas led the Vikings with three points in the quarter to keep the visitor lead in check.
The turnovers started to pile up in the third quarter as the deficit grew larger. Francis continued to not be denied in the contest as she tallied 10 points in the quarter as part of her game high 22 points to grow the lead to 41-16.
Spencerville scored late in the quarter on a three point play from Goecke and a basket by Heidi Keller to trail 45-21.
Spencerville fought hard in the final quarter and outscored Miami East in the period but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome. Keller led the charge with seven points in the quarter as the closest the Bearcats got was to 19 before the Vikings were able to put the game on ice with a 54-33 victory.
Spencerville drops to 4-7 to end the 2022 portion of their schedule. They will begin the 2023 portion of the schedule on January 5th when they visit the Lincolnview Lancers.
“We need to get back to practice some more and over the holidays it’s hard sometimes to get into a rhythm and it will be good to get back into that.” Said Spencerville head coach Greg Ekis.
