SPENCERVILLE-The Spencerville Lady Bearcats winners of two in a row took the court on Saturday morning to take on the Riverdale Lady Falcons. The Bearcats got off to a sizzling start from downtown to pick up the 58-36 victory.
“I thought we got off to a good start,” said Spencerville head coach Greg Ekis. “We shot the ball pretty well from three.”
Spencerville was able to take command of the game right from the very beginning as they started the quarter on a 10-0 scoring run. A pair of three pointers from Kirsten Wurst and Heidi Keller made it 6-0 before baskets by Wurst and Croft forced a Falcon timeout.
The Falcons made a quick charge in the final minute on a three point play from Kinsey Shull and a basket by Mariah Bonham to get within 14-7. A last second free from Clara Goecke extended the lead to 15-7.
The hosts connected on four three pointers in the second quarter and the lead continued to grow for the Bearcats. Keller connected on a pair of three pointers to grow the lead to double digits but the Bearcats were far from done in the quarter.
Croft buried a three pointer from the top of the key to lead 26-12 and the scoring run continued on a three pointer from Clara Goecke and a basket by Eilan Muniz to make it 33-14.
Both teams were cold from the floor in the third quarter as Riverdale outscored Spencerville 8-6. Keller scored a basket on a short two point basket but the hosts would go over two and half minutes before they scored another basket. Riverdale received four points from Bonham in the quarter but the lead was still 40-24 in favor of the Bearcats.
In the final quarter the duo of Croft and Keller proved to be too much for the Falcons. Croft knocked down a free throw after a Riverdale basket but found more success as part of her six point quarter. Keller notched seven points in the quarter as it included a three pointer to help seal the Spencerville victory.
“Being back to .500 is great and they are playing well together,” concluded Ekis. “LCC is a very solid team that we have to be ready for.”
Spencerville improves to 7-7 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday when they host LCC at 6:30pm.
