SPENCRVILLE-The Spencerville Bearcats hosted the LCC Thunderbirds on Tuesday night as they looked to continue their winning ways. The Bearcats got off to a big start to pull away for the 56-24 victory.
“When we can shoot the ball the way we did we will be pretty successful,” said Spencerville head coach Greg Ekis. “We had multiple players make three pointers and we had multiple players make the extra pass so we were pretty pleased with that tonight.”
The first quarter belonged to the hosts thanks to some stellar shooting and good defense. Spencerville raced out to a 7-2 lead as five points came from Clara Goecke and a basket by Gabi Croft. Heidi Keller found her stroke from behind the arc as she tallied eight points in the quarter to put the Bearcats up 22-6.
“We just really played to our scouting report tonight,” said junior Heidi Keller.
Spencerville defense continued to dominate as they allowed just four points in the quarter. Keller was far from done behind the arc as she connected on three more triples and included one to beat the buzzer to lead 38-10 at halftime.
“Heidi did a great job shooting the basketball tonight and Heidi is a great shooter,” said Ekis about Keller’s career night. “She was able to get some great looks from some great passes and a credit to her for knocking them down.”
The running clock was able to commence in the third quarter as the Bearcat offense was able to balance out. Olivia Stolly scored all of the quarter points for LCC but two more three points from Keller and four points from Croft gave them a 52-17 advantage.
The reserves were able to play the final quarter as the visitors outscored Spencerville 7-4.
Spencerville improves to 8-7 on the season and will host Columbus Grove in a key NWC matchup on Thursday.
“Columbus Grove is a great team and they are very well-coached and are physical and fast so it will be a good challenge and we have to a great job of preparing tomorrow.”
