Bearcats rally late against Fort Jennings

FORT JENNINGS-For five innings in Friday night’s game against Fort Jennings the Musketeers made the Bearcats pay for their mistakes. The Bearcats had some timely hitting and took advantage of Fort Jennings mistakes enroute to a 14-3 victory.

“They made errors and we utilized our arsenal,” said Spencerville head coach Norman Koenig.

Spencerville played from in front as a two out single from Cooper Chapman scored Carter Layman for a 1-0 lead.

Fort Jennings got a run back in the home half of the inning on an RBI single to right to score Calvin Menke to tie it at one run per side.

The Musketeers were able to take the lead in the third inning on a wild pitch that scored Menke for a 2-1 lead.

Fort Jennings added a run in the fifth inning on a line drive to first to score Owen Calvelage to extend the lead to 3-1.

“We had one play at the plate but it didn’t go our way and it ended up affecting us the rest of the game,” said Fort Jennings head coach Matt Dùbe. “We talked about cleaning up this field and we have our tournament game here on Tuesday and we need to bounce back and it’s a new season and everyone is 0-0.”

The Bearcats found their bats in the sixth inning that proved to be the difference. An RBI groundout from Aiden Graham cut the lead to 3-2 and an RBI single from Nathan Wood tied the game at three per side. Wood came around to score on a Fort Jennings error to give the visitors a 4-3 lead. Carter Ringwald grounded to first to score Blaze Young to extend the lead to 5-3.

A Musketeer error allowed Layman to score in the seventh to make it 6-3 and an RBI single from Emerson Layman scored Graham to extend the lead to 7-3. An infield single from pinch hitter Gavin Schwartz scored Layman for an 8-3 advantage. A steal of home made it 9-3 and a balk made it a 10-3 lead. Another Musketeer error allowed Schwartz to score for an 11-3 lead. The lead grew to double digits on a Fort Jennings error that scored Ringwald and Osting. Wood scored on a RBI groundout for a 14-3 lead.

Spencerville finishes the regular season at 3-18 and will begin tournament play on Monday at NWC foe Allen East.

“We play Allen East and it’s a winnable game for us and we need to come out ready to play and compete with them.” Concluded Koenig.

Fort Jennings drops to 8-11 and begins their tournament trail on Tuesday when they host Continental.
