SPENCERVILLE-The Spencerville Bearcats are 2-0 to begin the season and will have a chance to make it 3-0 on Friday night when they host a talented Riverside squad.
“Last week against Paulding we started off great both offensively and defensively, said head coach Kyle Koenig. “I was happy with how our defense was able to continue that effort as the night went on but Offensively we just had too many mental mistakes and penalties when we had chances to put the game out of reach, but came up with some big plays at the end to seal it.”
This week brings the challenge of a squad that has made the playoffs the last few seasons in the Pirates. However Koenig sees some similarities with their offense.
“Riverside is going to be a spread offense and they will distribute the ball to the many playmakers they have,” said Koenig. “The most notable one is their RB. They use him like we use a Nate Coulter offensively. We need to be aware of where he is at, at all times.”
The Bearcats had to make some second half changes on offense when Nate Coulter came out due to injury. However freshman sensation Will Sensabaugh rose to the occasion by catching a touchdown pass from Carder Orr and running a pick six to the house.
Koenig knows Riverside defense will have to start up front with blocking.
“Their defense is very solid, said Koenig. “We expect them to load the box and really try and make us one dimension and We need to be better and getting movement up front and sustaining blocks to be successful.”
Spencerville will look to go 3-0 for the first time since 2015 not including the Covid season. Koenig expects it to be a four quarter battle come game time on Friday.
“Riverside is a really good team,” added Koenig. “Made the playoffs last year and have played some tough competition in the first three weeks.”
“They have a lot of athletes and have a great Quarterback that can get them the ball and also make plays himself,” concluded Koenig. “It is going to be a 4 quarter battle and I’m looking forward to seeing how our guys compete.”
