SPENCERVILLE-It was a warm sunny afternoon at Memorial Field when the Spencerville Lady Bearcats hosted the Ottoville Big Green. A late goal by Grace Fleddearjohn helped the Bearcats to a 1-1 draw.
It was a scrappy first half and it was very physical by both sides. It was a total of 16 shots combined by both sides but neither team found the back of the net as it was scoreless at halftime.
“We played flat the whole day,” said Ottoville head coach Doug German. “Spencerville out-beat us to the ball every time so we just have to play 80 minutes and we have a good team to get things done.”
Both teams showed positive signs on offense but it wasn’t till late when both teams found the net. Following a foul by Spencerville, Morgan Hoersten had a free kick from five yards out and she sent it past the goalkeeper Jenna Wannamacher to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Spencerville wasted very little time as Grace Fleddearjohn was found on a breakaway and sent it to the back to tie it at the 10:27 mark. It broke a two game scoring streak for the Bearcats.
“This is huge for us today and I would count this as our first win of the season,” said Spencerville head coach Kathy Goecke. “Their goal was a tough call because both of those girls had their foot up but the call was against us but I count this as a win for us.”
Both sides struggled to get the winning goal as it resulted in a draw.
Ottoville’s record is at 0-2-1 on the season and will visit Allen East on Thursday. Spencerville stands at 0-3-2 and will host Columbus Grove on Tuesday.
