SPENCERVILLE-The Spencerville Bearcats played their offensive game plan to a tee on Tuesday night when they hosted the Lima Senior Spartans. The Bearcats scored two first half goals to pick up the 2-0 victory.
The hosts went on the attack in the opening half and it proved to be the difference. A Lima Senior foul gave the Bearcats a free kick. Isaiah Stewart was able to put one past the keeper to make it 1-0. The Bearcat passing continued to dominate as a Stewart pass led to a shot by Bryan Bollinger that gave the hosts a 2-0 advantage.
“We have seen Isaiah set other players up in the first four games tonight when Layman broke through and got a toe to get a free kick. We knew it was going to be Isaiah,” said Spencerville head coach Josh Van Gorder. “For him to score to get the money off his back as a senior and we saw him relax and it showed in the second half.”
The Bearcats went back to work in the second half to try to add to the lead. However the Lima Senior defense cracked down as the Bearcats were kept off the scoreboard in the second half.
In total Spencerville outshot Lima Senior 26-3 and corner kicks 14-2.
“Layman will pretty much stand tall for his team,” added Van Gorder on Layman. “He’s a stud goalie and tonight he got to talk to his teammates and tell them where to be and it’s important for him to do that.”
Spencerville improves to 3-2 on the season and will visit Fairlawn on Thursday.
