ALLEN EAST-The Spencerville Bearcats looked to regain their mojo on Friday night when they visited the Allen East Mustangs. However the Mustangs had other plans as they rolled to a 49-7 homecoming victory.
“Give Allen East credit tonight,” said Spencerville head coach Kyle Koenig. “They drove right down on us and we did a poor job tackling again and we need to improve on that but give them credit they were physical, ran hard and they had big backs that were very mobile and even their quarterback made good reads.”
It looked to be a shootout as Allen East took the opening kickoff and put together a drive that ended with a 67 yard touchdown pass but the extra point was no good and it kept it 6-0. Spencerville wasted little time in answering back as Nate Coulter raced 70 yards to the house and the extra point gave them a 7-6 lead.
“It was huge to get Nate going tonight,” said Koenig. “I was talking to coach Goecke before the game and I told him we just needed to bust something or whatever it is and the first play on offense for us and Nate takes it to the house and I thought it would be the spark that we needed.”
Following a pair of punts by both teams, the Mustangs took the lead for good with an 85 yard punt return for a touchdown and a two point conversion gave them the lead for good at 14-7. Jack Thompson added to the lead with a one yard run to make it 21-7.
The second quarter was all about the defense. Both teams had a couple of turnovers in the quarter but the Bearcats hung tough down 21-7.
“It was a totally different feeling from the last few games,” continued Koenig. “We were right there but we just didn’t execute in key spots and I made a late call in the second half when we were down in the red zone and should of called a timeout but didn’t we live and learn but our defense made a stand to end the quarter.”
Following a three and out by Spencerville, Allen East responded with a five yard run by Thompson to give them a 28-7 advantage.
Allen East was able to keep the offense going in the fourth quarter with 21 points to give them some breathing room and a run clock to end the game.
Spencerville drops to 2-5 on the season and will return home for homecoming next week when Ada comes to town.
“Even at the end of the day we feel like this is a game that we can win,” concluded Koenig. “We feel like it could get us going and Ada is still a solid team the quarterback runs it well and running back runs it well and we are going to have to really focus on stopping those guys in the run game and improve on that cause our run defense is killing us and we need to find a different approach to get guys in the right spots.”
