Spencerville-It was homecoming night for the Bearcats on Friday night and it was a must win in order to keep them in playoff contention. The Bearcats rode the horses of Zach Looser and Carter Layman as the ‘Cats picked up the 35-14 victory.
It was a pair of sloppy drives by both teams but the fumble by Spencerville gave Ada the ball with some momentum. Ada was able to punch in a late first quarter touchdown by Kaine Fisher to give them a 7-0 lead.
On the very next drive the Bearcats took six minutes off the clock and it finished with a five yard run by Looser to tie the game up at seven per side. Layman was able to give Spencerville a late lead in the second quarter with a five yard run to
lead 14-7. Both Layman and Looser had 34 rushing yards in the first half.
“It was big for Zach (Looser) and Carter (Layman) to step up tonight,” said Koenig. “With how up and down the game went tonight and it was our first rainy game of the year with fumbling the ball everywhere and having Carter as a senior in the backfield and knowing how to handle it was big for us.”
Spencerville took the second half kickoff and wasted very little time on the clock as Carder Orr found Nate Coulter wide open for a 75 yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 21-7. 28 seconds later Ada answered with a 77 yard run from Levi Green to cut it to 21-14.
Looser added to his big night with a four yard run to extend the lead to 28-14.
“He has grown up a ton since the summer and he continues to run hard for us,” said Koenig. “He probably could have played full back this year if we didn’t need a tight end so badly but him running hard is what we thought would happen and he had a big night tonight and I’m super proud of him.”
Orr put the final touches on the scoring column on a one yard run to finish off the homecoming victory for the Bearcats.
Spencerville now has a 70 plus chance to make the playoffs according to Drew Pasteur fantastic 50 rankings.
Spencerville improves to 3-5 on the season and will visit Crestview next week.
“Crestview is going to do a lot of different things that we have not seen yet this year,” concluded Koenig. “We are going to really have to study the tape coming up this week and get a really good gameplan going and probably throw in some different things to counter what their attack is going to be like.”
