CONVOY-Going into Friday night’s game the Crestview Knights were looking for better execution against the Spencerville Bearcats. Braxton broke out with a school record six touchdowns runs in the 42-0 victory over the Bearcats.
“It was awesome to get our line moving forward and creating some holes,” said Crestview head coach Cole Harting. “Our running backs did a fantastic job at finishing their runs and we came into the game we used three running backs on the first three drives and we wanted to go with the hot hand and Braxton scored on the first drive and we stalled out but he came right back in and stuck with him.”
Crestview got the ball to start the game and wasted little time on the scoreboard. A six play drive ended with a four yard run by Braxton Leeth to give them an early 7-0 lead. The Bearcats were able to get multiple stops on defense to keep Crestview off the scoreboard toward the end of the first quarter and early second quarter.
The Knights regained their momentum toward the middle of the second quarter with a five yard run from Leeth to extend the lead to 14-0. Crestview ran the two minute drill and ran to perfection that capped it off with a 11 yard run from Leeth to give them a 21-0 lead.
“The past couple of weeks I’ve kind of been struggling to run the ball but we worked on it this week at practice,” said Braxton Leeth on his big night.“Coach (Nate) Place has been pushing me hard this week to hit the holes and I just want to thank the receivers and line for blocking for me downfield and it’s up to them to be able to get me the touchdowns that I got tonight and I just have to give all the thanks to them.”
Following a three and out to begin the third quarter for Spencerville, Crestview responded with a 58 yard run from Leeth to give him his fourth of the night for a 28-0 lead. Crestview got an advantage with a blocked punt which resulted in another Leeth touchdown, his fifth of the night to tie the school record.
Leeth was able to reach paydirt from three yards out in the fourth quarter to give him his school record sixth touchdown of the night. He broke the record that was set by Travis Owens who had five in a game.
Crestview improves to 6-3 and keeps their playoff hopes alive and will need to beat Leipsic to have a chance at week 11.
“It will be huge for us with Leipsic coming to town next week,” concluded Harting. “Two good teams and they lost to Grove and Bluffton like we did so it should be a really good game next week. They’ll be hungry for a win and so will we and we really need this one to get in.”
Spencerville drops to 3-6 on the season and will face longtime rival Jefferson at home on Friday with a spot in the playoffs on the line for the Bearcats.
