Quick start helps Columbus Grove dominate Spencerville

SPENCERVILLE-The Columbus Grove Bulldogs look to continue their dominance in the NWC on Friday night when they visited the Spencerville Bearcats. The Bulldogs got up 24-0 in the opening quarter before pulling away for the 45-7 victory.

Columbus Grove didn’t waste time in the opening quarter literally as a two play drive resulted in a 35 yard touchdown pass from Riley Sautter to Gavin Basinger for the 7-0 lead.

Columbus Grove then recovered the onside kick on the ensuing kickoff which resulted in a four yard touchdown by Trenton Barraza and the extra point made it 14-0 with 11:13 remaining in the opening quarter.

Columbus Grove forced a three and out and was later able to add a 25 yard field goal by Evan Verhoff to make it 17-0.

Barraza added pay dirt once more in the quarter from 13 yards out to lead 24-0.

Spencerville found some momentum in the second quarter and scored on fourth down when Carder Orr broke multiple tackles and raced 51 yards to the house to get within 24-7.

Sautter continued to be impressive in his first varsity start at quarterback as he found Kyle Hopkins for a 35 yard touchdown pass for a 31-7 lead. Barazza ran more time to the end zone from 15 yards out to make it 38-7.

Sautter went through the air for the final score of the game as a 49 pass to Basinger made it 45-7.

Both teams went to the reserves in the second half and both teams were shutout to end the game.

Columbus Grove improves to 4-0 and will host Jefferson next Friday. Spencerville drops to 3-1 and will begin a 2 game road trip that starts with a visit to powerhouse Bluffton on Friday.
