Quick start leads Crestview past Spencerville

SPENCERVILLE-It was a calm and cool night at Spencerville high schools on Friday night as the Crestview Knights visited the Spencerville Bearcats in NWC action. The Knights went up two scores early to pull away for the 42-13 victory.

Crestview received the opening kickoff and went right down the field as Braxton Leeth ran one from 10 yards out to go up 7-0. A Bearcat turnover on downs led to another two yard run by Leeth made it 14-0 after one quarter.

“We vote on our captains every week and it’s based on our four core values and the one that he wins week in and week out is dedication,” said Crestview head coach Cole Harting of Leeth. “He’s dedicated to this team dedicated to the school and he puts the work in all the time.”

Spencerville was able to get on the scoreboard in the second quarter as a muffed punt set the hosts in great field position and capitalized on a fourth down touchdown pass from Carder Orr to Austin McMichael to cut it to 14-7.

Crestview regained their momentum on the very next drive as Leeth was able to punch it in from 13 yards out to extend the lead to 21-7.

On the next kickoff Spencerville fumbled on the return and the Knights capitalized on a one play drive as Huxley Grose found Wren Sheets from 28 yards out to lead 28-7.

Crestview defense was in full force in the first half as they allowed just 104 total yards.

“Coach Harmon does a great job week in and week out of putting our guys in position to make plays,” said Harting. “The last couple of weeks were difficult and we were in the right position to make plays but just didn’t make the plays but tonight our guys made the plays to win the game.”

Crestview defense got a score in the third quarter as Liam Putnam picked off Orr and ran it 10 yards to the house to give them a 35-7 advantage.

Both teams traded possession the rest of the quarter but the Knights were able to force the running clock with seven minutes left as Grose found Sheets again from 11 yards out to make it 42-7.

The reserves from both teams got in late in the quarter and the hosts found the end zone as freshman Keaton Jacobs ran from 13 yards out with little over 30 seconds left but it was the Knights that picked up the victory.

Crestview improves to 4-5 on the season and will visit LCC in the regular season finale in hopes of clinching a playoff spot.

“Every year you just want to get an opportunity to get to one more week,” concluded Harting. “At the end of the year you just want one more week with the guys and if this happens to be the last game we just want to send our seniors out with the victory.”

Spencerville drops to 4-5 on the season and will face a must-win situation on Thursday when they visit longtime rival Jefferson in the Battle of Route 66.
