DELPHOS-The stakes couldn’t be higher for the Spencerville Bearcats on Thursday night when they visited rival Jefferson for a spot in the playoffs on the line. Will Sensabaugh had three touchdowns as the Bearcats pulled away for the 54-7 victory.
“All week we put a big emphasis on getting off to a good start,” said Spencerville head coach Kyle Koenig. “We wanted to do our jobs and we did that tonight and didn’t look back but before we talked about last year’s game and how that left a bitter taste in our mouths and the guys responded incredibly well.”
Spencerville got the ball after a three and out and drove right down the field and scored on a 2 yard run by Zach Looser to go up 7-0. Jefferson got their only score on a 5 yard run by Luke Rode after Rode threw a 54 yard strike to Lucas Millmine.
Spencerville took the lead for good in the second quarter as Carder Orr threw a pass to Grady Smith and he did the rest as the birthday boy found his way to the end zone to go up 14-7.
Spencerville defense started to force turnovers as a Dylan Short interception led to a 6 yard run from Sensabaugh made the score 20-7 after a missed extra point from Orr.
“Will just keeps getting better and better every week,” said Koenig. “Even going back to last year as a freshman you saw major improvements throughout the year and it’s the same thing this year as he’s getting more comfortable in the backfield and he’s doing a good job.”
After another Wildcat turnover, Sensabaugh found pay dirt but this time from 5 yards out to make it 27-7.
Braylen Roeder picked off the next Jefferson possession and Carder Orr found the end zone the next play as he was on the money on a 35 yard pass to make it 34-7 at halftime.
After an exchange of turnovers to begin the third quarter the Bearcats drove down the field and scored on a 1 yard run from Looser to make it 41-7 and started the running clock.
Spencerville added one more score in the third quarter as another 1 yard from Grady Smith put the score at 48-7.
Both teams played their reserves in the final quarter but the visitors still found the end zone as a high snap on a punt attempt from Jefferson led to a 5 yard fumble recovery from Chandler Bassitt to put the score at 54-7.
