Elwer shuts down Bearcat bats

SPENCERVILLE-St. John’s looked to continue their hot streak on Tuesday night when they visited the Spencerville Bearcats. St. John’s freshman Cam Elwer made it standstill as he struck out a dozen Bearcat hitters to pick up the 6-0 victory.

“It’s one of our mottos is that we want to put the ball in play,” said St. John’s head coach Jerry Jackson. “Mistakes are part of baseball but by putting the ball in play they have to field it and catch it.”

Both pitchers had it dialed in early as Elwer and Spencerville starter Evan Osting kept hitters off balanced as neither team found success early.

“Evan pitched well but we had errors that didn’t help him any,” said Spencerville head coach Norman Koenig. “Once we get this turned around Evan is going to really help us as the season goes on.”

Austin Moenter started the third inning with a walk and was able to steal second and advanced to third on a Spencerville error. Braylon Metzger followed with a strikeout but was dropped so Mawhorr threw down to first for the out which allowed Moenter to score for a 1-0 advantage.

St. John’s was able to add three runs in the top of the fourth inning. A base hit by Nolan Schwiennen allowed TJ Wertz to score to make it 2-0. A line drive single by Metzger scored Griffin Mericle and Schwiennen to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Blue Jays put the final dent on the scoreboard in the final inning. A base hit by Elwer scored Colin Feathers and a sacrifice fly from Jack Gerker allowed Elwer to reach home to make it 6-0.

Elwer didn’t need too much run support on the night. The freshman right hander pitched the complete game in just 79 pitches that included 62 for strikes. Elwer allowed just two hits to Cooper Chapman while he sent down a dozen Bearcat hitters to get his first victory on the mound.

“It was Cam’s second start on the mound and I just felt like he was more comfortable on the mound,” said Jackson. “Obviously the temperature was warmer so he had a better grip on the ball so he was able to throw his off speed for strikes and he pounded the zone for strikes.”

Spencerville drops to 0-4 on the season and will visit league rival Jefferson on Thursday.

“It’s very important,” concluded Koenig. “We have to come ready to play and (Carter) Ringwald is going to be on the mound and we’ll see what happens.”

St. John’s improves to 4-1 on the season and is scheduled to host LCC on Wednesday.

“Well I don’t think Mother Nature wants either catholic school to play tomorrow but we will be ready to roll and I know they will be ready too and I’m excited to go play.” Concluded Jackson.
